When I was contacted to review this book, I have to say that I was excited and nervous at the same time.

I was not sure if I wanted to jump into this book. Not because it would not be a great book but because I wasn’t forsure I wants to face the fact that I might NOT be the friend that Christ has called me to be and this book would have me face those fears head on. Yikes!

However I took on the task of reading it and let me just say that the Lord help me to understand how to have a Christlike friendship with this book.

 If you have been with me long here at Becoming a Strong Woman of God you know that I am a military wife of 11 years. This life makes it hard to make friends because we are moving all the time. It seems just as we get settled, meet someone, it is time to leave.  I do have a best friend who we have been best friends with for 20+ years, she lives in one state and I live in another.

The first thing that caught my eye on this book was the warning it gave “Please read this book for yourself……not for your girlfriends”. {2} I believe as women we tend to find great comfort pointing out our girlfriends issues instead of addressing our own.

The next thing I loved about this book is she relates her real life stories to explain our actions. I can relate to that and it made it truly easier to understand why we do and act the way we do sometimes.

This was an easy read.

Marian takes the time out to discuss some pretty touch questions we face as women in our friendships. She also helps us to see that our friendships have “divine purpose” along with a few pointers for our friendships.

  • Our Culture
  • Our Calling
  • Our Heart

This book is packed with scriptures to help guide us in our friendships, probing questions to get to the core of our actions and helping us to examine our friendships from the perspective of God’s Word.

Marian really helps to get to the bigger picture that NO ONE can be our Jesus, except Jesus, not our girlfriends. “Only One saves us, Only one defines us, Only one completes us, Only one truly lays down His life for us, Jesus”.{52}

Though Chapter 4 {Dealing with your Baggage} was convicting, it was my favorite. Because it truly help me to look at myself and see what I was hindering in my relationship with Christ to be a Christlike friend.

Soaking on what sinful natures will hinder our friendship was laid out nicely.

  • Pride
  • Envy
  • Competition

This quote “Only when we choose to deal with our baggage do we experience the freedom and joy in our friendship that God intends”.  Spoke to me in a way that Jesus is the way to a great friendship. Without Him we look to our friends to fill spaces that only Jesus can fill.

After completing this book I felt refreshed and filled with a starting point on how to look to God first to be able to become a Christlike friend. Dealing with my “own baggage” releases anything that can hinder my relationships. Finding out what kind of friend I truly was, was an eye opener in where I need and want to be as a friend. Most of all it showed me that the more I learn about God the better I become in all areas of my life!
