In my opinion Psalm 37:3-4 are some of the most comforting verses yet some of the most misunderstood verses in the Bible.

As a single woman this passage of Scripture has much significance to me.  I clung to these verses in a time of deep discouragement, reciting them often in the night.

But what do these verses actually mean?  Does this passage imply that the Lord will give us whatever we want?

Many times there is a big emphasis put on “And He will give you the desires of your heart.” while sometimes we fail to remember and understand the “Trust in the LORD and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD” part.

Truly delighting ourselves in the Lord means that we willingly submit to His will in obedience, realizing His ways are better than our’s.  We must surrender our dreams and our desires to Him, allowing Him to shape and mold our desires to match His.

When we do this our desires will come back to us far better than before, far better than we could have dreamed up ourselves.

Truly delight in the Lord and He WILL give you the desires of your heart either through giving you the desires you have now or changing them to match His.

I can testify that the Lord keeps His promise.  I had my own plan and my own dreams until the Lord worked in my heart causing me to surrender my will to His.  The Lord WAS faithful, oh so faithful to me!  My desires were returned far better than I could have imagined and fulfilled fully and completely!

Trust the Lord.  Delight In Him.  He will not fail you.
