To be honest I can not believe that Christmas Eve is here. I seems to me that this year truly passed by quickly.

Being military our Christmas’s are spent together as a family. We put up a Christmas tree, because I am a sucker for pretty lights, decorate the fireplace and have little nit nats around the house to remind us of the season. We always open up our home to those that do not have family here and I cook a huge meal.

However for the rest of what goes on, it looks different in our home.

Jeremiah 10:2 says “Thus says the LORD, “Do not learn the way of the nations, And do not be terrified by the signs of the heavens Although the nations are terrified by them;”

Notice the “do not learn the way of the nations”?  It truly stuck out to us and we decided not to buy Christmas presents for our children or exchange gifts ourselves. Instead we decided to seek the Lord on how we could glorify Him during this time. He took us on a journey of learning to GIVE instead of RECEIVE.

Our children are 22, 15, & 10 and this was not an easy task to accomplish. It is still not easy today and we have been doing it for 5 years because of the influence of the world on their back, they feel like they are missing out on stuff. They do get things through out the year and thought showing them the gifts they receive all year long, opposed to one month a year, helps in making room to help others.

Once the holidays start, around Thanksgiving, we start praying for the Lord to show us where He wants us to give. It could be a family in need, Angel tree, serving at the local Salvation Army, or just acts of kindness.

It truly has been a blessing to show our children how to give instead of receive. Our flesh wants to receive all for itself however when it learns to give we can be Gods hands/feet to those we come in contact with.

Here are some things we have taken away in drawing closer to Christ with giving instead of receiving:

  1. Opening up conversation to share the gospel
  2. Learning how to give ourselves away, freely
  3. Being good stewards of Gods money
  4. More opportunities to help others arise
  5. When we are obedient, God always comes provides

Walking out this walk with Christ is sure not easy, however it brings such joy knowing that when we are obedient to Him, He always provides a way to show Himself to others.

How does your CHRISTmas look different then the world? I would love to hear your comments below on how your holidays have change since walking with Christ.
